He is the first State Trooper listed as fallen in the line of duty for Ohio State Troopers on Officer Down Memorial Page.

He was electrocuted while repairing a radio receiver in the radio room at the DHQ Findlay Post. - Sandusky Star 18 Jun 1935; Page: 1; Column: 8.

FUNERAL OF BEST TO BE HELD THURSDAY
FINDLAY- Sergeant John "Jack" Best, 28, chief operator of the state highway patrol station WPGG here, who was electrocuted yesterday, was believed by engineers to have touched a transformer, stepping up to voltage from 100 to 400.
Best had been testing radio receiving tubes. No sign of a heart beat was detected from the time Stanley Smith, inspector and Lester Long, radio operator, found his body on the floor of the radio room. Firemen and state highway patrolmen used artificial respiration on Best for several hours.
Best, married and the father of a six-weeks old child, lived near Upper Sandusky. Funeral services will be held Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Salem Tp, Wyandot-co.
