Ellen, originally Elna Nilsdotter, was born in Sweden, in Stora Herrestad Socken, Herrestad Härad, Malmöhus Län, Skåne Landskap, the eighth of nine children born to Nils Olsson and Anna Rasmusdotter. She and her widowed mother departed from Liverpool, England, on the RMS Carmania and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, 19 May 1909. Ellen is listed as single, 5' 7", and a servant. Also traveling with them was Ellen's future husband, "Mr. O. J. Mayer, U. S. citizen, to Kensington, Minn." Ellen may have been in America before. She married Ole J. Mayer in 1909, and they had three children: Annie Elenora (later Eleanor A. Zetterberg Boylan, 31 Jan 1910 to 1973), William Magnus (Basil, 31 Jul 1911 to 28 Dec 1963), and Carol Sextus (22 Aug 1913 to 14 Oct 1985).

From the Park Region Echo, Fri., April 1, 1921, p. 6, col. 1: Mrs. O. J. Mayer passed away to the great beyond on Wednesday morning at the Barret [sic] hospital. It was a shock to the whole community as she was well liked and will be greatly missed by all her friends, and especially at the Sunday school where she was a tireless worker among the children. Funeral services were held on Saturday at the church here. The church was packed to the very doors. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The choir rendered beautiful songs. Burial was had at the Kensington cemetery. Her age at the time of death was 39 years, 1 month, and 9 days. She is survived by her husband, 1 daughter and 2 sons; also 8 sisters [should be 2], and an aged mother. The pall bearers were C. Hallberg, J. Hellberg, J. Skougseth, Ed. Vindahl, H. Watterling, and J. Blixt. The bereaved have the sympathy of the whole community. [end of quote]

Ellen’s mitochondrial (maternal) DNA haplogroup was J1c3.
