Attorney Samuel M. Smith, 90 years, oldest practicing attorney in Waynesburg, and one of the oldest in the state, died suddenly at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in his home on East High street.

Mr. Smith was a son of Dr. Sylvanus Smith and Louise Crayne Smith and was born at Jefferson, October 12, 1865. He attended public school and graduated from Monongahela College which was located at Jefferson.

He then read law in the well known firm of Wiley, Buchanan and Walton in Waynesburg, and was admitted to the Greene County Bar on October 8, 1888. Motion for his admission to practice was made by Attorney P. A. Knox, father of Federal Judge John C. Knox of New York.

Mr. Smith was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Syria Shrine. He also was a member of Waynesburg Lodge No. 469, I. O. O. F.

Mr. Smith had been a school director for a number of years. He also was the first president of the First National Bank and Trust Company when it was organized in 1927. He was a charter member of Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce and also of the Greene County Country Club.

On October 22, 1890, Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Moredock, a member of a prominent Jefferson family. Her death occurred March 25, 1931.

Surviving are one daughter, Miss Louisa C. Smith, head of the English department of Waynesburg High School, and one son, Harry Smith, an electrical engineer in the Westinghouse Corporation in Sharon; one grandson, Samuel M. Smith, II, of Sharon, and one sister, Mrs. C. C. Gregg of Lippencott. Four brothers and one sister are deceased,
