Mr. Horace Emery died Wed-
nesday noon at the home of his
son, Elmer Emery, southeast of
Greenspring. He had been ill
about a year and was quite ad-
vanced in years, being nearly four
score years of age. He was born
in Maine and came to Ohio many
years ago. The funeral services
were held from the house Satur-
day morning at 10 o'clock. Mr.
Emery owned a fine farm near
Greenspring, and was one of the
pioneers of that section.

An interesting thing to note, Horace is buried in Lowell Cemetery, a few miles south of Green Springs, meanwhile his wife Mary (West) Emery is buried in the cemetery in Green Springs. In his wife Mary's obituary, it states: "The remains of the husband, the late Horace Emery, who was buried in the Lowell cemetery will be disinterred and removed to the cemetery to this place".

It doesn't appear that this ever happened. Moreso, why were they not buried in the same cemetery? Especially when Mary's parents, Ezra and Prudence West are buried in the Lowell Cemetery, as well as a brother and sister and and two of their children, Helen Cordelia Emery and Charles N. Emery! My conjecture is that the Lowell Cemetery STOPPED burials there shortly after Horace died in 1900. So Mary was relegated to the Green Springs cemetery. At least she is there with her son Elmer and many grandchildren and their offspring.

And someday Grandma I will also join you in the Green Springs cemetery. Rest in peace.

Note: Horace's wife Mary (West) Emery is buried in the Green Springs Cemetery. It's believed that interments in Lowell were halted shortly after 1900 and Mary died in 1909, therefore she was buried in the Green Springs Cemetery.

The small stone for Horace, shown in the photos, was placed in the Green Springs Cemetery in front of Mary's stone. It is hoped that this will help in the mystery of why Horace and Mary are not buried together.

Gravesite Details

The monument in Lowell Cemetery shows Horace's year of death as 1901, it should be 1900.
