He carried the famous Van Rensselaer name and was apparently married to Mary Alice Fleming, born March 25, 1810 and died Sept. 6, 1881. Both people are buried at the churchyard of the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, Columbia County, New York.

Leigh sent me an email on Jul 22, 2014 that says he was baptized at Trinity Church in Manhattan, New York on 20 Oct 1813 and that his year of birth was listed as 7/09/1813. His parents, in her source, are listed as Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer and wife Cornelia. The sponsors are Thos. Y. How (Jabob's brother-in-law) and Thomas's wife Angelica How (Jacob's sister). The other sponsor is David T. Greene (Cornelia's brother-in-law).

Leigh also informed me that other children of the couple were James Fleming Van Rensselaer, born 4 Dec 1844 in New York, Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaer, born 19 Jan 1846, and Julia Van Rensselaer, born 9 Aug 1850.
