Dorothy (Dottie) Boyle, 97, of Dewey, Ariz., died May 4, 2011, in her home at Prescott Country Club of natural causes.

She was born March 2, 1914, in Mantua, Ohio, to Arthur and Emma (Berg) Kuchenbecker. She was one of nine brothers and sisters.

My mother grew up on the family farm in Ohio. She never missed a day of school and her passion was basketball. After high school she went through three years of nurses training at Akron City Hospital, and it was during this time that she met my dad when she and her best friend went out on a double date. It was a case of changing partners when my dad was insistent on dancing all night with my mother.

It is interesting to note that my father went home that night and told his mother that he had met the girl he was going to marry. Over the next three months he would serenade my mom under her window with his ukulele while sitting on the fender of his 1931 Ford roadster convertible. They were married in 1937 and, along with my father, golf became my mother's new passion.

After the war, my parents moved to Java, Indonesia, when Goodyear sent him there to take back a tire factory captured by the Japanese. Later they were transferred to the jungles of Sumatra where my dad managed a rubber plantation until 1965. When asked what their favorite place was, they would always say the 12 years spent on the plantations. From Indonesia, my parents moved to Izmit, Turkey, then to New Delhi, India, and finally Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

My parents retired here in Dewey where they have lived happily in their own home by the 8th tee on the Prescott Country Club for the past 35 years.

When people asked my mom how she managed to live so long, she would reply, "Well, golf is the main reason I'm healthy, but also I try to eat seven fruits and vegetables every day." This was probably good advice because it kept my father alive for 100 years; he just passed away seven months ago.

My parents would have been married 75 years this year on Aug. 30. My mom's favorite hobby of course was playing golf, and she never let a day go by without writing in her diary.

My mother is survived by my two sisters, Penny and Rita; and me, Robert Jr., the baby, now 60.

My mother's ashes will be inurned in a niche alongside my father at the Heritage Memorial Park Cemetery on Fain Road. There will be a memorial service 10 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Faith United Community Church, 1061 Old Chisholm Trail, Dewey, Ariz., followed by a fellowship gathering to remember my mother's life. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

Donations may be made to "Clothe-A-Child" program in my mother's name, P.O. Box 25735 Prescott Valley, AZ 86312. Please put "Clothe-A-Child" on the check. Thank you.
