John Henry Fuhr III

John Henry Fuhr III, 90, of Denton, TX passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in Denton. He was born on November 11, 1920 to Oscar and Mildred (Olfield) Fuhr. He attended the New London, TX School and was one of the few survivors of the March 18, 1937 gas explosion that killed an estimated 300 teachers and students. He was married to Mary Terry on December 14, 1943. John had a distinguished military career and served on General Macarthur's staff in the reorganization of Japan. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Stanfield Masonic Lodge #217 in Denton. He was one of the founders of the 1st Masonic Lodge in Tokyo, Japan during the early days of American occupation. John was active in the Boy Scouts his entire life, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. After the military, his second career was as a police officer at Texas Woman's University. He was a long time Sunday school teacher for Asbury United Methodist Church in Denton.

Services include a rosary on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 8 pm at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton; a visitation from 9:30 to10:30 am on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Denton Funeral Home with burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery at 11 am.

Survivors include his sons, John Henry Fuhr, IV of Dallas, and Robert Fuhr of New Braunfels; daughters, Kathryn Fretwell of Denton, Patricia Carlson of Palm Beach, FL, and Mary Ann Morgan of New Braunfels; eighteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; son, James Fuhr; and sister, Susan Childers.

Services are under the direction of Denton Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
