Charles M. "Chuck" Cooney, 98, of Lilly went to his eternal rest Saturday at Conemaugh Memorial Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Lilly, son of the late Charles and Mathilda (Yingling) Cooney.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Thomas A. and James R.; and two sisters: Mary Margaret Schouten and Edna Elizabeth Barrett.

He is survived by a brother, Paul A. Cooney and wife, Marcelle, and their daughters: Patty, Joi and Cindy, all of Cresson; Edna's children: Joan (Barrett) Garahan of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., Tommy Barrett-Edmonton of Canada; and Edna's grandchildren: Tina, Tony, Hannah, Sara, Rachel, Danny and Sammy. Chuck will be sadly missed by his caregivers, Carol, Roberta, Kim and Lorrie.

He was a member of Our Lady of The Alleghenies Catholic Church, Lilly.

He was WWII veteran with an honorable discharge serving in the European Theatre from 1941 to 1945 and was a first sergeant in the 385th Infantry, Second Division. He was wounded on Dec. 17, 1944, in the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg and returned to the battlefield from 1945 until the end of the war, receiving the Purple Heart.

He founded the Cooney Brothers Coal Company in 1955 with brothers Paul A. and James R. and mined coal by open pit in Cambria, Blair and Somerset counties. From 1988 to 1992, Cooneys was the largest producer of bituminous coal by surface mining method in Pennsylvania.

Chuck loved farming and had a herd of 150 buffalo on his farm near Lilly where many people came by and enjoyed seeing them.

He also loved Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and Pittsburgh Steelers football.

He was a great supporter of Cambria County 4H. In 1982, he set an all-time price for a grand champion that still stands today at $8.00 per pound, which was all given to charity.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. today, May 16, 2011, at the Thomas F. Cloherty Funeral Home, Lilly, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Our Lady of The Alleghenies, Lilly, by Rev. Msgr. John R. Sasway as celebrant. Committal will be at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Cresson, with military gravesite rites by Lilly American Legion and Lilly V.F.W.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Nursing Hospice Care, 118 Ebony Road, Ebensburg, PA 15931.
