Born in Steingraben, Austria, he came to the US at age of 19. Aboard the "Paris" in steerage, "Rudolf Schatz" arrived at Ellis Island on April 1, 1922. He had $35 dollars in his pocket and was sponsored by his Uncle Joseph Mickowitsch of New Castle, Pennsylvania. As a young man, he would walk on occasion from his room near 7th Street and Lehigh Avenue in Philadelphia to visit his cousin and her family in Bristol, Pennsylvania. During his life he worked at a variety of businesses including Columbia Steel, Sears, and a variety of restaurants as a cook. He worked at Ferry's in Kensington, Williamson's in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and both the Vesper Club and the Midday Club in downtown Philadelphia. An avid gardener, he loved roses and ornamentals. In earlier days he was a recreational juggler, expert with balls and Indian clubs. He was an avid reader throughout his life. He taught himself Spanish in his mid sixties to better communicate with the Latino kitchen workers. Appreciating his efforts, they provided him daily lessons and quizzes during breaks. Married to Anna Maria Reichard on November 7, 1936, in the Church of Mariatrost, he had two children, Anne Marie, born in 1943, and Rudolph Joseph, born in 1947. He was a member of Saint Henry Church (now defunct) in Philadelphia, and Saint Matthew Church in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
