Born in Helena, Ark., he was a son of the late Harry I. Sutherland and Clara Harmon Sutherland. He was a graduate of Marion High School, where he was an avid sportsman, playing both football and baseball.
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after thirty years of service, and at the time of his retirement he was with the Fourth Marine Division. Milton was in the second wave on the assault of Iwo Jima. He had received numerous medals, including the Bronze Star. Following his retirement, he was associated with the Holiday Inns in Greenville.
He was a member of Northside United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his sister, Delia Sutherland Gaffney and her husband, Richard M., of Greenville; and a niece, Delia G. Malone and her husband, John, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two nephews, Morgan Gaffney of Roswell, Ga., and Baker Scott of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a great niece, Jessica Scott of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two great-nephews, Richard Elliott Tapp of Greenville and Keith Harrison of Seneca; and Jacqueline Kudrov and Aaron Avila. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Sutherland Kish and a niece, Mary H. Scott Kudrov.
Services will be Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Barry W. Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends at the Mausoleum following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside United Methodist Church, 435 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609 or to the charity of one's choice. -- The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
