Clara was the daughter of George C. "Chick" and Ella Elmore Harmon of Sardis, Mississippi. Her father died when she was young leaving her mother and five siblings. Ella rented out rooms and managed a small hotel in Sardis to bring income into the household. In 1911, Clara married Harry I. Sutherland. They lived many years in West Helena, Arkansas. They had three children: Milton, Eloise, and Delia.
