Assaba was the son of Gideon & Justina Frey. According to the U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885, six of Gideon & Justina's children died of Scarlet Fever in March 1860. Their names were Jane, Elweina, Josephine, Oswell, Mary & Monetta. Only their infant son, Assaba survived. They went on to have five more children after this tragedy. In the Federal Census Mortality Schedule the ennumerator wrote in the notes at the bottom of the page the following:

"Gideon Fry lost 6 children within two weeks. One solitary infant was spared."

The siblings born after Assaba were Henry, Sarah, Charles, Maggie & Catherine Frey.

The following are two obituary clippings:

Asaba Frey, a well known farmer residing near Stockwell, died early last Saturday morning at the Home hospital in Lafayette, following an operation for cancer of the abdomen, which he underwent some time ago.
Mr. Frey was born in Pennsylvania, 65 years ago, coming to Tippecanoe county 47 years ago. He had resided on his farm near Stockwell for the past twenty-six years. In 1883 he was united in marriage to Abbie Ellen Smith, of Geetingsville. To this union, eleven children were born, ten of whom with the widow survive. The deceased was a member of the Reformed church and was a man of sterling character, being highly respected by all who knew him.
