ST. JOE YOUTH IS KILLED IN AUTO, TRUCK ACCIDENT

David Cook, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Cook of R. 1, St. Joe, was fatally injured in a highway accident early Thursday morning and died in St. Joseph's hospital, Fort Wayne, at 8:55 p. m. His automobile crashed into a tractor-trailer on state road 427 about 300 feet north of the intersection with state road 1.

According to Dr. A. P. Hattendorf, Allen county coroner, Cook's death resulted from head injuries. He was hurled from the automobile and was found unconscious on the highway. He was badly cut about the face and head, and suffered a compound fracture of the left arm and body abrasions. Cook regained consciousness at the hospital only long enough to identify himself and give names of relatives to be notified.

The accident occurred at 12:30 a. m. H. Argoruinger, 46, of Kalamazoo, Mich., driver for the Bell Motor Freight company, swerved the truck completely off the highway and onto the berm in an effort to avoid the crash, when he saw the headlights of Cook's car swing over into the north lane of traffic. The tractor and trailer were jack-knifed by the impact.

The youth was returning to Fort Wayne, where he resided with his brother, Wayne, after spending an evening with a girl friend, Miss Patricia Ohmart, of southeast of Auburn. Young Cook was employed at the Five Point Corner Standard filling station on the Goshen road out of Fort Wayne.

He was driving his own automobile, a 1937 Nash, which he had insured in Auburn the day before the accident. The car was demolished.

The wreckage of the crash was not cleared from the highway until late Thursday night. The truck, which was partially wrecked, was proceeding north on the highway. It was carrying a 12-ton load of paper cartons for the Kellogg company of Battle Creek. The great weight of the cargo made it necessary to unload the trailer before the wreckage could be cleared sufficiently to allow traffic to pass in the north-bound lane.

Deputy Sheriff William Oswald of Allen county, who with state police investigated the accident, said it was possbile that Cook had fallen asleep at the wheel of his car.

Cook attended the St. Joe high school, leaving after the completion of his sophomore year in 1945.

Surviving, besides the parents, are four brothers, Walter, of Butler, R. F. D., Robert of Grabill, Donald of Hicksville, O., and Wayne, with whom the deceased resided, of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. John Harter of Newville, Mrs. Wilbur Diehl of Butler and Mary, at home, and the two daughters of his stepmother, Delores J. Ross and Gladys Mae Ross, at home.

The funeral was held at the Christian church in Newville Sunday afternoon. The Rev. J. L. Bennett of the St. Joe Christian church officiated and burial was made in Scipio cemetery, three miles south of Hicksville.
