Deborah Cashvan

Deborah B. Cashvan NORFOLK - Deborah Brooke Cashvan died May 17, 2011 at her family home overlooking Mason Creek at the 8500 block of Culfor Crescent, attended by her husband, companion and partner in life for 28 years, Emilio Sousa; her daughter, daily confidant and rarely-more-than-10-minute-away friend, Brooke Mesisco; her adored and adoring son, inheritor of her crafting craftiness and joie de vivre, Jeffrey Cashvan; and her closest friend and Whisper Sister of 39 years, Karen Gilbert. Born Dec. 29, 1944 in Garden City, N.Y., to Herbert and Jayne Cashvan, Deborah - Ms. Deborah, Barn Queen Deborah, Big "D." Little Debbie, Nana, Honey - cared deeply for and gave herself to all who knew her - friends, family and many, many animals, alike - and she will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched. Aside from the things in her life that gave her the most fulfillment and pleasure: being mother, grandmother, horsehand and friend - Deborah, as well, served as president of The Virginia Equine Association and enjoyed a rich hobby-career as a consummate planner, organizer, decorator and menu maker for any party that came her way. She is survived also by her large circle of friends and, most especially her dear and closest to her heart, granddaughters, Mary and Emily Mesisco; her two Arabian mares she raised and nurtured in the tradition of her own father's Cashvan Arabian Farms, Peanut and Salin; and the brother she grew through life with and who always had an ear to lend or bend with her, Jeffrey S. Cashvan. There will be a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today with a brief prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 1501 Colonial Ave., in Norfolk. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk. Friends and family will be gathering to honor Deborah in her own style afterwards. "Deborah plants a seed of graciousness and generosity in the hearts of everyone she meets. Once in our hearts they grow like pearls in an oyster from the love she brings to our lives. Soon there will be as many pearls in our hearts as stars in the sky. Thank you, Deborah." The family requests a donation to EQUI-KIDS (equikids.org) in lieu of flowers. Ride on, Deborah! Ride on through it!
