John I was the first Gaither to come to the colonies. His name is listed in records also as Gatear, Gater, The Immigrant and The Colonist.
In 1620 John came to the colonies on board the ship "George," . He is listed in the "Census of the Living and Dead" with the Governor of the colony, Sir Francis Wyatt. He is living in James Citie, is alive, and works for the Virginia Company. By 1624, he is living on Mulberry Island, is living alone and is head of house. This is the heart of Virginia's tobacco industry. John becomes a tobacco inspector and factor. He would travel to England and the Plymouth colony trading tobacco for goods and supplies. He is shown returning to Jamestowne in 1635 aboard the "Assurrance" with wife Joan/Jane. The manifest sets his birth at 1599. It is not known what happened to Joan, but 31 Oct 1642, John marries Mary Walters in St Luke's Church, Chelsea, England. John survived the next war with the natives but was prompted to move to Maryland in 1649 because of his religion. He then relocated to Maryland where he died in 1652.

John Gatear (Gaither) received 300 acres in Elizabeth City County, a neck of land on the eastern branch of Elizabeth River -- fifty acres of which were due him on his own personal adventure, and 250 acres for the transportation of his wife Jane and five persons, in 1636 [sic-1635]. He received 200 acres more on the south of Elizabeth River for the transportation of four persons, the names not given.

"Came in the 'Assurance', 1635, Jo. Gater and Joan Gater, aged 36 and 33 years, and John Gater, 15 years." (Source: Holten's List of Va.) Nothing more is known of Jo. Gater 15. It is unlikely he was related to John I.
"The name of John Gaither was sixth on the list of the corporation of James City."
"The Virginia records show John Gaither seated upon five hundred acres for the transportation of ten persons. "

"John Gaither was one of the founders of The First Parish Church, at Sewall's Point, Maryland in 1640."
