Bobbit Family History:
Michael Beck, the first of our Beck family to reach America, was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on September 30, 1779, and died in Hagerstown, Indiana, on March 20, 1841 (119, 120).
Michael Beck married Susan Hahn in Germany ca. 1804. Susan Hahn was born in Germany on January 14, 1783, and died in Hagerstown, Indiana, on June 29, 1871 (120,121). Both Michael and Susan Hahn Beck are buried in Westlawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Indiana.
It was in 1805 that Michael and Susan Beck came to America (120). They settled first in Heidelberg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, but in due course moved from Pennsylvania to Hagerstown, Maryland. In the summer of 1835 Michael Beck and his entire family left Hagerstown, Maryland, and came overland by covered wagon to a small settlement in Wayne County, Indiana, that was at that time called Elizabethtown. Michael's journey westward was made over the road that become known to early day travelers as the "national Highway".
About the time that Michael Beck was moving to Elizabethtown other families were arriving in this Indiana village from Hagerstown, Maryland. As a result of this influx of families from Hagerstown, Maryland, the name of the village was changed to Hagerstown, Indiana, in memory of their former Maryland home.
Michael Beck spoke his native German language almost exclusively. He was a very religious man and was a skilled craftsman, particularly in the art of wood working. A German Prayer Book published in 1784 and belonging to Michael Beck is in the author's (Babbit family) library.
