Knight, 4th Lord Scrope of Masham, Privy Councillor, Treasurer of England.

Fourth son of Stephen le Scrope, 2nd Lord Scrope and Margery de Welle. Grandson of Sir Henry le Scrope and his wife Joan, and John, Lord Welles and Maud de Roos.

John was the husband of Maud Greystoke, daughter of John Greystoke, 4th Lord Greystoke and Elizabeth de Ferrers, daughter of Robert de Ferrers. They had no chiildren.

Secondly, he was the husband of Elizabeth Chaworth, daughter of Thomas Chaworth and Nichole Braybrooke. They were married before 24 August 1418 and had three sons and five daughters: Henry, John, Sir Thomas 5th Lord Scrope of Masham, Magistrix, Eleanor, Anne, Elizabeth, and a second Elizabeth. Elizabeth would marry Henry le Scrope, 4th Lord Scrope of Bolton.

John was summoned to Parliament in Jan of 1426 as Johanni Lescrop de Marsham. John was heir to his older brother, Henry le Scrope, 3rd Lord Scrope of Masham and Knight of the Garter.

He died testate and was buried at York Cathedral. Elizabeth took the veil in 1455 and died in 1466.
