Our village was shocked when on Monday Feb. 7th word was received that John Harte had passed away at his home at Shelby, Montana, the previous evening at 11 p.m. and that the remains were beiong brought her for burial. The Yoeman Lodge of Dawson of which Mr. Harte was a member too charge and arranged for the funeral at the Congregational Church at 2:00 p.m., February 10th. The deceased came to Tappen in the spring of 1882 and filed on a homestead where he lived until the spring of 1910 when he moved to Shelby, Montana. John was a citizen of high moral standing in the community in which he lived and his word was as good as his bond.
John Harte was born in Layayette, Indiana on April 13, 1861. On June 19th 1887 he was married to Miss Mary E. Glass of Tappen, N.D. Together they passed through the pioneer days of Kidder county. To this union ten children were born, seven boys, one dieing at the age of two years, and three girls.
His wife and nine children and two grandchildren survive him, all living at Shelby, Montana. Also three brothers and one sister, Chas. Harte of McMinnville, Ore., Joe Harte of Pontiac, Mich., and Andy Harte and Mrs. Luise Wagner of Dahinds, Sask, Can.
