WILLIAM JAMES "BILL" HEMPHILL, a resident of Naples, Fla., passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010. He was born in Jacksonville, Ill. on September 11, 1920 to Jeanette Taylor and Chester Abrams Hemphill. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Immediately upon graduation from college, he joined the Army Air Corps, 2nd Division Brigade. Mr. Hemphill was a fighter pilot assigned to the China/Burma India Theater in World War II. He was a member of the First Air Commander Unit and was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star medals. After being discharged, Mr. Hemphill graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Hemphill spent his entire business career in international pharmaceutical sales, helping to develop markets in Southeast Asia, Japan, India and Australia. He and his family lived in Hong Kong and Tokyo for a number of years. In Tokyo, Mr. Hemphill was a Deacon of the Union Tokyo Church and a member of the Board of Trustees of the American School of Japan. At the time of his retirement, he was senior vice president of Bristol-Myers Company, International Division. He is survived by his two sons, James T. (Laura) Hemphill of Glastonbury, and Robert B. (Sheryl) Hemphill of Brighton, Mich. and four grandchildren, James of Raleigh, N.C., Kristin of New Britain, Matthew and Ryan of Brighton, Mich. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hemphill was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Patricia "Pat" Hemphill; brother, Robert; and sister, Mary Smith. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 15, 2010 at 1 p.m. at The Glenview at Pelican Bay located at 100 Glenview Place, Naples, Fla. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the University of Illinois, Champagne Urbana, Scholarship Fund or to a charity of your choice.
