Alexander Sutherland's Will
Grayson County Will Book 2, 1839-1849 Alexander Southerland's Will I Alexander Southerland of Grayson County do hereby make my last will and testament in accordance and form following ------after the payment of my just debts and funeral expenses, I give and bequest unto my beloved wife Peggy one third of my estate both real and personal for and during the time of natural life and after she's deceased, I desire to be sold and equally divided amongst my daughters except the land and one dollar to each of my sons, Thomas, Joseph and John , my daughters namely Jane, Fillis, Peggy, Sarah, Polly , Barbary and Phebe and same to be enjoyed by them forever. 2nd I give my son John all my lands and -----to him and heirs forever after my death except the tract my daughter Peggy now lives on. And 3rd after the third part of my estate is taken, it is my desire that the said tract of land lying in Ash County in North Carolina shall be saved for my daughter Polly and her heirs out of her part if her part amounts to more than the expense of saving her land the balance to be paid to her make her equal with the rest. 4th It is my desire that my property should be divided equal amongst my daughters if agreeable and if not, to be sold and the money equally divided amongst all my daughters but I leave the legacy that equal divided to Peggy Hail and Sally Hail to be kept in the hands of my beloved wife and son-in-law William Cornett for their benefit but for then and suitable to them and Lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my friend William Cornutt and John Hail to witness of this my last will and testament hereby making all other and former wills and testaments by me here before made. In witness whereof I have thereunto set my hand and affirm my seal this August 12, 1831.
