US Congressman. He was born the eldest of five children to Jonathan Lawrence and Lucy Clark Lawrence in Weybridge, Vermont, and relocated to Moira, New York, with his parents while still a child. He was educated in local common schools and eventually went on to study law. He was admitted to the bar and commenced his practice of law in Moira, New York. On August 8, 1832, he married Mary Fuller, and the couple had two children, son William was born in 1839, and duaghter Mary Jane was born in 1841, both children passed away while still infants. He was named Supervisor and as Assessor Surrogate of Franklin County, New York, and served in that position from 1837 to 1843. He then decided to enter public service and was elected as a Member of the New York State Senate representing the 4th District from 1843 to 1844. He also served as a Member of the New York State Assembly in 1846. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Democrat, he then served New York's 15th District (Thirtieth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849. After his term in the United States Congress had expired on March 3, 1849, he resumed his law practice. He also became a successful businessman in real estate and banking pursuits. His wife Mary passed away in 1855, and he married for a second time to Frances Merab Atwater on December 4, 1855, and they would have three children together, daughter Mary Frances was born in 1856, daughter Carrie Maria was born in 1859, and son William Sidney was born in 1863. His second wife Frances passed away in 1888 at the age of 78. He passed away in Moira, New York, at the age of 90 and was buried in the Moira Community Cemetery.
