Professor Davidson Eckels for half a century a Teacher
Special Telegram to The Patriot
CARLISLE, Oct. 10. Professor Davidson Eckels, of this place, perhaps the oldest schoolmaster in Pennsylvania, died here to-day, aged 80.
For nearly sixty years he taught in the public schools here. He taught in the various departments for fifty consecutive years, but, owing to the weight of age, was a few years ago placed on the supernumary...list, and since this has filed vacancies among the regular teachers.
In 1857 he was principal of the High School, and among his pupils was a boy called by his classmates "Good Ben" Lamberton, but whose name is now known throughout the country as Captain Benjamin P. Lamberton, late of the United States cruiser Olympia.
Professor Eckels graduated from the Carlisle High School in 1838 and later took a course in Dickinson College. He was an earnest and indefatigable worker in his line of work. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. F. D. Zimmerman and Mrs J. W. Livinger, both of Carlisle.
Funeral services will take place at 10 o'clock Monday, Rev. Miles O'Noll officiating. The interment will be in the old Graveyard.
