US Congressman. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Alabama's 3rd and 7th Districts in the Thirtieth and four succeeding Congresses, and served from 1847 to 1857. Born in Elbert County, Georgia, he graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1828, where he was admitted to the bar two years later and set up law practice. In 1834 and 1835 he was a member of the State House of Representatives. After moving to Wetumpka, Alabama in 1838, he became solicitor of the Eighth Circuit and was twice elected to the State Senate (1844, 1845). Citing ill-health, Harris declined to run for a sixth term in Congress and died a few weeks after leaving office. He was buried in Athens; there is a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
