Mrs. Sidney Howard Dies at 65; Active in Schools and Theaters
Playwright's Widow Was Daughter of Damrosch, Symphony Conductor
Mrs. Polly Damrosch Howard, widow of Sidney Howard, the playwright, died yesterday at New York Hospital. She was 65 years old and lived at 168 East 71st Street.
Mrs. Howard suffered severe head injuries in a fall on June 28 at her summer home in Tyringham, Mass. She never regained consciousness.
Her husband was crushed to death by a tractor in his garage at Tyringham on Aug. 23, 1939. It was believed that someone had left the tractor in gear and it pinned Mr. Howard against the garage wall when he cranked it.
Mr. Howard won the Pulitzer Prize for 1925 for his play "They Knew What They Wanted."
Mrs. Howard was a daughter of the late Walter Damrosch, for many years conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra.
Granddaughter of Blaine
Her maternal grandfather was James G. Blaine, Secretary of State under Presidents Garfield and Benjamin Harrison, and Republican Presidential candidate in 1884.
An accomplished pianist, Mrs. Howard received her musical education at the Fontainebleau School of Music and Fine Arts in France. The school was founded by her father.
She was born in Hartsdale, N.Y. She was married to Mr. Howard in 1931.
She was a trustee of the school and a member of the boards of the Phoenix Theater, 334 East 74th Street, the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, 340 East 54th Street, and the Oratorio Society of New York.
Mrs. Howard leaves a son, Walter Damrosch Howard, who is on the publishing staff of Time-Life International; three daughters, Mrs. Samuel Goldwyn Jr., wife of the film producer; Mrs. Brian Urquhart, wife of a United Nations official, and Miss Margaret Damrosch Howard; three sisters, Mrs. Herman Kiaer, whose husband is president of Fearnley & Eger, shipping; Mrs. Thomas K. Finletter, wife of the American ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and Mrs. Robert Littell, widow of an editor of The Reader's Digest, and six grandchildren.
There will be a funeral service for Mrs. Howard at the Unitarian Church of All Souls, Lexington Avenue and 80th Street at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. A service will also be held at the Union Church in Tyringham at noon Friday.
