Gretchen Blaine Damrosch Finletter was the daughter of famed Conductor Walter Damrosch and Margaret (Blaine) Damrosch. She was also the granddaughter of Secretary of State James Gillespie Blaine and Harriet (Stanwood) Blaine of Maine. Mr. Blaine was also the Republican Candidate for President of the United States in 1884. Gretchen married Thomas Finletter in 1920. The couple had two daughters, Margot (Finletter) Mitchell and Lee "Lili" (Finletter) O'Neill. Thomas Finletter served as Secretary of the Air Force under President Truman and Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (1961-1965) Mrs. Finletter published two books. The first, "Top of the Stairs was published in 1946. The book recounted the life of the Damrosch family. Her second book, a novel called "The Dinner Party" was published in 1954. She died at her home in New York at the age of 75. She is buried with her husband in Bar Harbor, Maine. Both her daughters have since passed away and are both buried with their parents at Ledgelawn Cemetery.
