Harold Barton Kahn was serving aboard the Oiler (AO), USS Pecos (AO-6), which was sunk by Japanese aircraft south of Christmas Island, 1 March 1942, in the Indian Ocean in position 14° 27'S, 106° 11'E, during thr Battle of the Java Sea.
Kahn was one of only 5 listed as known dead; 163 were listed as missing in a partial listing ; 8 listed as injured; and only 64 listed as survived. Total aboard ship 317. In the face of repeated air attacks beginning at 11:45 a.m. , the ship was only abandoned 18 minutes before sinking at 3:48 p.m. The conduct of the crew throughout the action was "exemplary and followed the best traditions of the Navy."
