BIOGRAPHY provided by Ellen Sorenson
on June 18, 2011:

August was the fourth of 9 children born to John and Agnes M (Sinnen) Welter.

He married Marcella Ann Neumann. They had 8 children: Louise, Paul, Chuck, Jeff, Ruth, Joan, Art, and Roy.

OBITUARY provided on March 14, 2012:
Welter, August E. (Gus) age 88, of Bloomington. Charter member of Bloomington Fire Department and longtime member of Nativity of Mary parish. Preceded in death by loving wife of 61 years, Marcella; and grandson, Tyler Jensen. Survived by children, Louise Garrelts, Paul (Jane), Chuck (Diane), Jeff (Sharon), Ruth (Bud) Jensen, Joan (John) Czaia, Art, and Roy (Julia); 22 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Also survived by sisters, Janice (Bill) Dupont and Sister Linnea Welter OSB; and brothers, James Welter and Gerald (Mary) Welter.
Gus lived a fruitful and varied life, from his boyhood days on a farm in Chanhassen, MN to entrepreneurial careers in heating, air conditioning, and residential construction in the Twin Cities. Heart damage caused by rheumatic fever prevented Gus from serving in the military so he went to refrigeration school and helped the Army build outposts on the Trans-Alaska highway during WWII. After the war he opened a heating and air conditioning shop in downtown Bloomington, which in 1947 was the site of the first organizational meeting of the Bloomington Fire Department. Gus was appointed Assistant Chief and helped develop the BFD into one of the finest fire departments in the nation. Following his retirement from active fire service Gus served with the National Volunteer Fire Council for many years. In 1990 he received both the Lifetime Achievement and Firefighter of the Year awards from the Council. A lifelong thirst for knowledge served Gus well. He loved to find better ways to do things, whether it meant using pneumatic tools to speed construction, applying computers to calculate firefighter pension programs, or converting a Greyhound bus for road trips with his family and friends. Besides being able to fix anything from a watch to a diesel engine, Gus was an accomplished hunter, musician, sailor, and dancer. He especially enjoyed social interaction, often working behind the scenes in support of civic, charitable, and religious organizations. Gus had a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all his family.
Memorials to Prolife Across America or donor's choice. Special thanks to all who took such tender care of Gus in his final months. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Nov. 4, 1:00 PM with visitation one hour prior to the service at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 9900 Lyndale Ave S., Bloomington. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 3, 5-8 PM at: Washburn-McReavy Werness Brothers Chapel 2300 W Old Shakopee Rd 952-884-8145
