Mrs. Rachel Derry Dies.

Was Pioneer and Mother of First White Child Born Here.

In the death of Mrs. Rachel Bogue Derry Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Eaton, 701 Illinois, Neodesha lost one of its earliest pioneers. Mrs. Derry was the mother of the first white child born in Neodesha. The girl was named Neodesha Derry. She was later married to Mr. Thomas Fulton. She has been dead for several years. The Derry home was the eighth house built here. It was on the site where the Neodesha National Bank now stands.

Mrs. Derry was born July 23, 1843, in Vermont, Illinois. She was married Nov. 2, 1862. In 1869 Mr. Derry drove to Kansas locating here, and Mrs. Derry and family followed him later coming on the train as far as there was a railroad and taking the stage from Paola, the end of the railroad, to Neosho Falls, where Mr. Derry met them.

Mr. Derry was a member of the first city council. He was one of the boosters for the early town and had a prominent part in its beginning. He died July 16, 1891, and is buried in the Neodesha cemetery.

About 22 years ago while Mrs. Derry was visiting Oregon she lost her eyesight and has been blind ever since, not even being able to distinguish daylight from darkness. In spite of her affliction she always remained cheerful.

She was the mother of eight children, but only three of them survive her. They are Charles W. Derry, Taft, California; Mrs. Eva Eaton and Mrs. J.E. Garriott, both of Neodesha. There are ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

She also has two brothers and two sisters, They are William Bogue, Robinson, Kansas; Owen Bogue, Sheridan, Oregon; and Mrs. Laura Eson, Palmdale, California; and Mrs. Cora Green, Washington.

The funeral of Mrs. Rachel Derry was held Sunday afternoon from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Eaton, 701 Illinois. Rev. G. Alfred Brown, pastor of the Christian church, of which the deceased was a member, was in charge of the service. Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Pitney and Mr. and Mrs. Blaine White formed the quartette which furnished music.

Mrs. Derry had expressed the wish before her death that the grandchildren should be pallbearers at her funeral and this request was granted. The grandchildren who acted as pallbearers were Mrs. Geo. Reves, Mrs. Lala Thomas, Miss Leora Garriott, Mrs. Cecil Fleming, Rupert and Charles Eaton.

Burial was in the Neodesha cemetery.
