JUSTO NORIEGA JR.: 1931-2006 // Pharmacy mourns loss of generous patriarch.

The female voice on the answering service for Bill's Prescription Center is somber.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform our customers, she says, that Mr. Bill has lost his battle with cancer.

Justo "Bill" Noriega Jr., 75, died Tuesday at his Brandon home.

Mr. Noriega opened Bill's Prescription Center in 1956, back when a phone number had six digits and Brandon had only one traffic light.

"He was a terrific guy," said Dennis Hansen, 50, a pharmacist at Bill's Prescription Center. "He put the customer ahead of everything."

Mr. Noriega was known to help out customers who couldn't afford their medicine. Charges would be delayed, or waived.

"It would be paid back somehow, or it wouldn't be paid back at all," said Mr. Noriega's son, Albert, 44. "That's unheard of today with all your CVS's."

But when the Boy Scout troop came looking for a donation for an upcoming camping trip, Mr. Noriega would put them to work. Only after they picked up the trash from the flower bed and swept the parking lot would he help their cause.

Some of those Boy Scouts are now in their 30s, said Albert. And they still remember Mr. Noriega's life lessons.

"He wasn't just a father to us," Albert Noriega said. "A lot of families looked to him as an inspiration."

Mr. Noriega was born in Ybor City. He graduated with high honors from the University of Florida in 1954 and moved to Brandon in 1956.

"He never retired," said his daughter-in-law Ellany Noriega. "He was in there until he couldn't physically be there anymore."

Mr. Noriega is survived by his wife, Michele S. Noriega; mother, Melecia V. Noriega; sisters, Melecia N. Noriega and Dolores Vaglica; daughters, Felicia Noriega Dickey, Mary "Lulu" Noriega Denham; and sons John B. Noriega and Albert A. Noriega.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Nativity Catholic Church, Brandon.
