Wrote poetry as a hobby and had a number of his poems published. He said his flair for poetry must come from his grandmother who was a cousin of Edgar Allen Poe. Lawrence was elected Mayor of Neodesha, Kansas, in 1941. His father was Charles Stewart Catlin, son of Robert Catlin (b. 6/10/1809; d. 5/17/1872) and Catherine Marks (d. 9/4/1873). His mother, Hannah Elson (b. 9/4/1827 d. 8/25/1872) was the dau of William Elson (b. 5/12/1785; d. 9/20/1849) and Hannah Stewart (b. 2/14/1785); d. 2/22/1860). William Elson was the son of Richard Elson and Mary Turner of Prince George County, MD. They moved to Carrollton, Ohio in 1810, bought land, the deed being signed by James Madison. Richard was a Sergt. Rev. War. Ref. Penna Arch. 5th Series, Vol 5, p. 138.
James Arthur Catlin b. Feb 16, 1925, Kansas City, MO., is the adopted son of Lawrence and Opal Catlin. By a previous arrangement with guardians, he was brought to their home where he became a loved member of the family circle.
