US Congressman. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army, rising to Captain and commander of Company D, 120th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois's 18th and 20th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 to 1889.
