He was moderator of the General Assembly at Xenia, Ohio, in 1863; was delegate to the Pan-Presbyterian Council at Belfast, Ireland, in 1884; was Member of the Board of Education during part of his stay at Monmouth; was member of the Board of Publication from 1876 until 1891. He received the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1858 from Jefferson College, Penn., and of Doctor of Laws in 1872 from Washington and Jefferson College, Penn. His publications include An Address before Franklin College in 1854 [see NOTE 1], Two Sermons in the Associate Reformed Pulpit, Vols. IV and V, Two Debates, one in defence of Calvinism, and one against Spiritualism, a Paper on the Massacre of St. Bartholomew, prepared by direction of the General Assembly and read before that body in 1872, and many newspaper and review articles.

He was married Nov 26, 1840 to Lucy Jane Bennett of Blairsville, Penn. His wife survives him, as also do two children, Mr. W. B. Young of Monmouth, Ill., and Mrs. Rev. John A. Gordon, of Lordsburg, Cal. He died at Lordsburg, Los Angeles Co., Cal., on December 5, 1894, from strangulated hernia." [see NOTE 2]

NOTE 1 - Franklin College was established by the famed abolitionist Rev. John Walker at New Athens, Ohio. Rev. Walker's daughter, Jemima, married Rev. John Alexander Gordon in Monmouth, IL in 1866, and died hours after the birth of their only child in 1867. In 1871, Rev. Gordon married Rev. Young's daughter, Elizabeth, with the ceremony conducted by Rev. Young himself. Thus, Rev. Gordon twice married daughters of college founders.

NOTE 2 - Lordsburg was platted by entrepreneur Isaac W. Lord in 1887. It was incorporated as the town of La Verne in 1906.
