BERYL RICHARDS DROWNED IN CEDAR MONDAY NIGHT

Was Bathing In Company With Nine Other Boys. None of Whom Were Good Swimmers

Beryl Richards, 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Richards who live on the Fred Fiene Farm 10 miles southeast of Nashua, was drowned in the Cedar River about 5 miles south of Nashua, just east of the Syracue school house, about 9:30 Monday evening.

Richards and nine other boys had gone to the river to bathe, as they had done on previous occasions. The first warning of the young man's danger came when he cried out for help. The other boys were some distance away and as it was quite dark they were unable to locate Beryl or know just where he went down.

One of the boys in the party ran to the home of Will Christman near a mile distant and a telephone call was sent to Nashua for the pulmoter and help. A number of firemen and other responded quickly. Many also came from Plainfield and a search for the body was started. After searching for some time a human chain was formed across the river, the men holding onto a rope and after wading up the stream for a block or two Walter Kemp of Plainfield, one of the men stumbled over the body.

This was about 12 o'clock, and as the body had been in the water for more than 3 hours, life was entirely extmet.

Beryl was born near Shell Rock April 9, 1916 and had live in this vicinity about 15 years. He was a young man of fine character, respected and loved by all who knew him, and his untimely death has cast a shade of deep sorrow over the community.

Surviving besides the parents are three brothers, Rual, Roger and Merwin, and five sisters, Alene, Joyce, Marian, Elizabeth and Marjorie.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the home and at 2 p.m. at Six Mile Grove church. Rev. G.C. Lusted officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery at Shell Rock.
