Norton W. Merkel states in his Merkel Family History that Elizabeth Merkel married John Dunkel who was the "Captain John Dunkel" son of Peter Dunkel of Berks Co., PA and a 1st cousin to this John Dunkle who died in Vinton Co., son of Killean/Keleain Dunckel (Keleain was brother to Peter).

"Anna Elizabeth, daughter of Georg Merckel and Christina Hill was born and raised on the Mercklen Settlement Homestead in Richmond Twp., Berks Co., PA. Captain John was of Greenwich Township, the son of Peter Dunkel, the son of Johannes Dunkel who, with his mother, were the immigrants who settled on the Dunkel's Homestead in Greenwich Twp., Berks Co., where Captain John was born." "Synopsis Merckel: Markle:" by Norton W. Merkel.

HOWEVER, NORTON MERKEL HAS ERRED IN HIS IDENTIFICATION OF CAPT. JOHN DUNKEL AS THE HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH MERKEL. The proof that Captain John Dunkel (FAG Memorial# 72193042) did not marry Elizabeth Merkel is in the baptism certificates of 3 of Captain John's children, which specifically name Anna Elizabeth STEIN as the mother of those children born 1807, 1810 and 1815 (Seth, Benjamin and Abraham).

Therefore, is Anna Elizabeth Merkel the wife of this John Dunkle, Sr.? In deed records in Pickaway County, Ohio, John Dunkle and his wife, Elizabeth, signed deeds when they sold land there.

If this is truly Anna Elizabeth Merkel, her birth date is 4 Jun 1768, and she was born in Richmond Twp., Berks Co., PA, the daughter of Georg Markel and Christina Hill Markel. The birth date of 1768 does not match her age listed in the 1850 Census.
