Ann Rogers was born in the parish of Redruth , Cornwall, England, being baptized there on 11 Nov 1798, the daughter of Benjamin Rogers and Elizabeth Knight who had been married on 5 May 1787 at Redruth. She was raised in a small hamlet in the parish of Redruth called Mawla. To her parents were born nine children: Mary, who married John Eastman; Elizabeth; Sarah, who married William Tippett; Benjamin; Catherine, who married Richard Jones; Ann, who died young; Frances; and Susannah, who married Joseph Wearne and emigrated to Australia. Only three of the children were baptized at Redruth, while the other six were baptized in Benjamin's home parish of St Agnes, just to the north. Their home at Mawla fell between the villages of Redruth and St Agnes. Following the 1803 death of her father, her mother married second at Redruth on 20 Dec 1806 to John Eastman (bap 23 Jun 1766 Gwennap), whose first wife Amy Rule was also deceased. Elizabeth had two more children by John Eastman: Frances, who married George Tippett; and Thomas Eastman, who married Mary Quick. Elizabeth (Knight) (Rogers) Eastman was age 76 at the time of her death on 6 Oct 1844 in the village of Forge, in the parish of Redruth. While Gwennap and Redruth are separate parishes, they fall under the same civil registration district of Redruth.

Both of Ann's husbands were Cornish miners. She first married William George on 15 Feb 1817 at Redruth. William George had been one of three men sharing a lease under a three lives system. One of the men who had been on the lease with William had left for Australia, and the other had died before William. Following William's death, the widowed Ann and her six children were evicted from the home. Not long after Williams death, Ann married second Henry Maynard on 29 Dec 1830 at Redruth. With Henry, Ann had three more children: Charles Henry, Benjamin Thomas, and Mary Cecelia. With several of her children having emigrated to North America, Henry and Ann followed in 1855, settling first in Waterdown, Ontario, where her daughters Ann (George) Nichols and Elizabeth (George) Edwards had settled. After about a year and a half there, they continued on to Cooper Country in Michigan, settling in Eagle Harbor. Following Henry's death in 1863, her son Joseph George lived with her until her death in 1878.

From a letter written by Ann (George) Nichols on 13 Jul 1900 from the home of her daughter Jenny (Nichols) Stringer in Detroit to her son Fred.

"In the first place, I call my home Redruth, but it is Redruth Highway; That is, it is about one mile from the town of Redruth, east of Redruth. Redruth Highway is in the parish of Gwennap, County of Cornwall, England, eight miles west of the city of Truro, and less then twenty miles from Lands End, but I have no wish that you should see the misery of the poor fisherman's homes; the poor Cornish miners homes are bad enough, but the next county is still worse. Only, if you do go down to Cornwall, you may as well see it all, so I will try and tell you a little plainer.

The home of William George, in the village of Redruth Highway, parish of Gwennap, eight miles west of the city of Truro, and one mile east of the town of Redruth. William George died in this village, and was born there about the year 1790, and died there in about 1830, being about forty years old; was buried at the Gwennap Church, about two miles from the village. He was a miner. He left a widow and six children. His property consisted of two houses built of gray stone, with stone fences about two feet high, and an iron railing. Garden in front. Houses both alike, and about forty feet square and at the east of the village, being the end of the street, but two houses east of ours, as there was no more room for building on that street, which was the main street, as Squire William property joined our place. No one could build much beyond my father's place, and if you wish to find out anything about William George's property, you can find out by going to Gwennap town and church, where the records are kept; but it may be difficult now, as it is nearly forty years since we were turned off of my father's home, but I well remember it all and the injustice of it all and, alas, well do I remember the bitter tears of my mother when turned out of her home, with six small children.

Now Fred, this is a strange tale of woe mixed with hatred toward the English government, but it is quite correct, with the exception of my bad feelings, and I wouldn't lay out five dollars on the property if I had a thousand in the bank, as my father was one life on the place and one had died before and the third life had gone to Australia. So you see that was the reason that the "lords of the land", as they were called, jumped on it, saying that they couldn't find the man who had gone abroad."
