Ivan was the first born son of William "Bill" and Esther (Anderson) Klawonn.
He married LaVanna Dorothea Emma Stender on January 26, 1946 in Rock Island, IL.
They were the parents of three sons.

Upon his discharge from the service in 1945, Ivan found employment in the Quad cities while also assisting his father with the farming.
In 1948, Ivan and LaVanna moved to the Klawonn farm in Andover Township, rural Cambridge and he formed a partnership with his dad.
Ivan was also self-employed in the insurance business.

Ivan was a veteran of WWII, past commander of the Andover American Legion Post 465, active in the National Farmers Organization and a member of St. John's Church and their married couple's club.

Funeral services were held at the St. John's Church in Edford Township, with Rev. Alfred Schubkegal officiating.
Military rites were conducted by the Andover American Legion.
Active pallbearers were Dwayne Wind, Donald Gelaude, Ronald Swanson, Paul Schmedt, George Pavel and Robert Gustafson.
Honorary pallbearers were George Lundberg, Vernon Haars, Raymond Schultz, Everett Betcher, Donald Gustafson and Charles Swanson.
