Uncle Uly was born the second of twelve children to Deacon Chapman W. and Mary Jane Frazier-Rhodes. In his late forties, he moved to Buffalo, New York. He worked hard and in a few months was able to have his wife, and children join him in Buffalo. Uncle Uly was a soft-spoken, pleasant, strong and generous man. My brother and I would occasionally meet him at the bus stop when he came home from work. For years he worked at a car wash. He'd always give us a nickel or dime for candy, etc. Though tired Uncle Uly would playfully pick up and carry us, one under each arm, a few feet before putting us down. I liked being around him because he had a calming presence. He was truly a very good man who seemed to have had the patience of Job.
