Maggie was a daughter of Col. Robert A. Johnson, Sr. and his first wife, Cornelia Ruffin Johnson. Her mother died when she was only three years old, after giving birth to Maggie's brother, Robert, Jr., in New Orleans. Maggie grew up surrounded by wealth. Her father was a lawyer as well as a "turfman", meaning he owned, bred, and raced thoroughbred horses. On October 8, 1874 Maggie married a second cousin, Tom L. Johnson at Louisville, Kentucky. Together they had three children: Robert Ruffin Johnson who died as a young child, Loftin Edwards Johnson, and Elizabeth Flournoy Johnson. Tom and Maggie lived an opulent lifestyle as Tom made a fortune in street railways, first in Indianapolis and then in other cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, Brooklyn, and Cleveland. He also owned steel mills in Lorain, Ohio and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Maggie's husband Tom was a Progressive in politics. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives in the late 1890s and was mayor of Cleveland, Ohio from 1901-1909. Following her husband's death in 1911, Maggie lived in the home of her daughter, Bessie Mariani, who was an aspiring playwrite. The two, along with granddaughter Margaret Mariani, moved to Los Angeles prior to 1930. It was here that Maggie lived her last days. Her death notice was printed in the New York Times.
