Roman Catholic Leader. Archbishop of Cologne and cardinal. Born in Koblenz, Germany, he was educated at the University of Bonn and the University of Münich. Made a Doctor in theology by apostolic brief of December 21, 1867, he was ordained priest on August 27, 1842, in Trier. He served as Chaplain of St. Kastor, Koblenz, was an Honorary canon of the chapter of the cathedral of Trier in 1859, and was elected to the chapter in the third ballot with 7 of 13 votes, October 22, 1867. On December 20, 1867 he was elected bishop of Ermland, Prussia, and was consecrated, May 3, 1868, by Paul Melchers, archbishop of Cologne. He participated in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Cologne, June 30, 1885. Since 1886 he was a chairman of the Fulda Episcopal Conference, and was created a Cardinal priest in the consistory of January 16, 1893, receiving the red hat and title of S. Crisogono on January 19, 1893.
