U.S. Congressman. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Colonel in the New York 4th Orange County Regiment and after the war, he served as Major General of the New York State Militia, (1786-93). He was member of the New York State Assembly, (1778, 80, 82-85, 95, 1805) and served in the New York State Senate, (1786-90, 99-1803). In 1789, he was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the First Congress, serving until 1791 and elected as a Republican to the Fourth Congress, serving (1795-97). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death.
