ARVADA, Colo.: Mary Belshaw Davis, 81, of Arvada, Colo., died unexpectedly in her home Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000. Born Dec. 23, 1918 in Rockford, the eldest daughter of Archie and Bernice Belshaw. Grew up in Rockford, Roscoe and Rockton. Graduated from Hononegah High School. Received her Bachelor of Education degree from Rockford College in 1940. Later continued graduate studies at the Garrett Theological Seminary. Received her Master's Degree in English Literature and Drama from Northwestern University in Evanston. Mary's career as a teacher began at Sweet School in Shirland and later on to South Beloit High School. She continued her interest in elementary education by taking a position in Superior, Ariz., where she met and married her husband of 51 years, F.T. "Casey" Davis. They eventually moved to Golden, Colo., and finally settled in Arvada, where they raised their three children and Mary taught high school English. Later, her involvement in the education of her children was guided down a new path as an ESL educator in the public schools, where she took much interest in her young international students. For decades, she was a world traveler and enjoyed sharing her experiences with her students, family and friends. In 1990, Mary received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Rockford college for her involvement with the Alumni Association and her work toward advancing adult literacy in the Denver community. She was a dedicated volunteer in the Arvada Museum Cultural Center as a docent. Active in her community as an election judge, precinct election committee member and member of the Republican Party. Her dedication to the Arvada United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women spanned many years. Survivors include daughters, Gay Lynn (John) Miller of Washington, D.C., Gwen Elaine (James) Leone of Rupert Falls, Idaho son, Scott Bruce (Sherry) Davis of Cleveland, Ohio six grandchildren one great-grandchild sisters, Betty Ann (Daniel) Weiss of Deland, Fla. and Audrey (James L.) Johnson of Rockford. Predeceased by husband, F.T. "Casey" Davis parents, Archie and Bernice Belshaw and sister, Evelyn Belshaw Trembath.
A private family service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27 in Fort Logan National Cemetery, with a memorial service to follow in Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr, Arvada, Colo. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the United Methodist Literacy Program, c/o the Arvada United Methodist Church or to the Docent Program at the Arvada Museum Cultural Center, c/o Scott Davis, 2389 West Fifth St., Cleveland, Ohio, 44113. 12-24-2
