US Congressman. He was born in England in about 1796 and immigrated to the United States and settled in Pittsford, New York, with his father in 1806. He attended and was educated at local common schools. After his schooling was over he moved to Rochester, New York, in 1813. He found work as a carpenter and also engaged in mercantile pursuits. He also worked as a miller in the milling business. He later decided to run for public office and was elected as a Member of the Board of Aldermen and served in that position in 1834 and again in 1844. He also served as the 4th Mayor of Rochester, New York, from March 1837 to 1838. He then ran for a seat in the United States Congress and won the election. A Whig, he then served New York's 28th District (Twenty-Sixth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1839 to 1841. He was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor in 1852. After his time in public service had ended, he returned to his milling business pursuits until his death. He passed away in Rochester, New York, due to a rheumatic affection of the heart at the age of about 68 or 69.
