Staff Sergeant "K" (and sometimes "Sergeant Alphabet") served with the 426th Civil Affairs Battalion in Upland, California. In addition to his service in the Persian Gulf War (where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart), he was called up on January 4, 2004, to deploy to Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As he was preparing to deploy, he complained of severe stomach pains – which was most unusual to his battle buddies who knew him as a soldier who could endure anything. Sadly the stomach pains were the symptoms of stomach cancer and Sergeant K died within 6 months. We learned of the loss of our battle buddy while stationed in Mosul, Iraq.
