Much maligned by the sensational phamplet of Virgil Stewart in 1835 and still later by the fabricated tale of Robert M. Coates, Zilpha (or her husband) never owned or operated a tavern and did not teach her son to steal. Her husband Jeffrey was a Methodist minister, and their son John Andrews Murrell was found guilty of being a horse thief and later of harboring a slave. Virtually all other stories about him are unsupported by facts or evidence.

The Murrells were said to be an extremely handsome family. "John A. Murrell, especially, was remarkable for his manly beauty, curling auburn hair, worn long generally, decorated a classic head, and a prepossessing face, that would, said an observer, have drawn attention and been noticed among a thousand people ... His sister, Leanna Murrell, was remarkable for her beauty, and was the most skillful dancer of her day." (Columbia Herald and Mail, June 8, 1877).
