The figure at the center of one of the most notable insurance scams of the 19th century, the fraudster William Wackerle, alias Frank Ettine, was the husband of Walburga Schneider. The details of the case, involving the Astoria Fire Insurance Company and Wackerle's faking of his own death may be still be found relatively easily. His real death occurred in Shreveport, however, during what was meant to be a brief sojourn here. He was buried at Oakland Cemetery, but his grave was never marked. The photograph accompanying this memorial was made in San Francisco by photographer Alexander Edmont circa 1860, when he was in that city.
