1908 July 1 Spokesman Review-Pioneer Brewer is Dead-Joseph Winker of Republic Succumbs to Acute Indigestion. Republic, Wash. June 29-Jopseh Winker after less than 10 days critical illness from acute indigestion died today. He was known throughout Ferry and the adjoining countiesand in Butte, Helena and other places in Montana, where he formerly resided. he spent a dozen years in Montana having entered the employ of the Kessler Brewing Company at Helena in 1886. He was later associated with Henry Muntzer in the Butte Brewery at Butte. He came to Republic in April 1898, and with George Falligan started a brewery plant on the Kettle Falls wagon road, three miles east of Republic. As the business grew it fell into the hands of the Republic Brewing Company of which Mr. Winker was secretary-treasurer. He leaves a wife and two infant boys, twins, which his wife bore him less than three weeks ago, and a mother, brother, and sisters, who still reside in Minnesota. Awaiting word from his aged mother, who may cometo Republic, the body will be held and escorted to the train by the Republic aerie of Eagles and conveyed to Spokane, where the Funeral will take place under the auspices of the order of Elks.
