Ed Hanson

Ed Hanson of Viking passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 16th, at his home after an illness of more than 8 months.

Mr. Hanson was born in Modum, Norway, April 18, 1865, coming to this country with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elef Hanson Gilstad, when he was a little more that a year old.

After living in Racine for a short time the family established a home in Viking, town of Gilman, Pierce county.

On Oct. 3, 1895, he married Lottie Rudesill of Viking, and after a year and a half residence in the town of River Falls they moved to the Hanson homestead in Viking.

In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Hanson moved to the home a mile and half northwest of their old residence, in the town of Eau Galle, St. Croix county.

A son, Harvey, and a daughter Ella (Mrs. Melvin Barsness) are their only children.

On Dec. 6, 1935, Mr. Hanson had the misfortune to fall on the ice and break his left hip. He has been in bed since that day suffering from that injury and complications. A stroke of apoplexy on Tuesday, Aug. 4th, hastened his death which occurred Sunday, Aug. 16th.

He is survived by is wife, his son Harvey, his daughter Ella, and his grandsons Harland, Ivan, and Lorne Hanson, Marland and Allen Barsness, and a sister, Miss Katherine Hanson of Minneapolis.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19th, with burial in Greenwood cemetery in River Falls, Rev. Edward McCann of the Hammond and Centerville M.E. church officiating.

Bertram Olson and son, Carl, of Pleasant Valley sang his favorite hymns, "O Think of the Home Over There," "Rock of Ages," and "Nearer My God to Thee."

Nephews of the deceased acting as pallbearers were Leslie J. and Fred B. Hanson of River Falls, Joseph Gilstad of Baldwin, Samuel Gilstad Rudolph Halverson and Nels Barg of Viking.
