Born in the Texas - Oklahoma Panhandle, Clarence "Bud" Schultz worked on the family farm and became a star high school football player nicknamed "Wildcat" for his tenacity. Later he played football for West Texas State and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a geology degree. After serving in the Naval Air Corps during World War II, he married Jeane Ellen Clark, who was to be his loyal wife and partner for 48 years. Together they raised a happy family of four children.

He also pursued a career in the oil industry where he earned a solid reputation for his exploration skills. He worked for several companies, including Texas Eastern Corporation, where he advanced to Chief of International Exploration. A fixture on the Houston oil scene for 40 years, he was active as an independent geologist working wit a partner on a variety of projects until his death. An avid follower of the Houston sports teams and a fine athelete himself, he enjoyed tennis and golf, especially when he broke 90. Affiliations include the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Gulf Coast Geological Library and Houston Geological Society.
