"Funeral services were held at the Virgin Mortuary in Hemet, California on Wednesday November 1, 1989 for Helen Witwer Clifton, 83, who died Sunday October 29, 1989 at the Hemet Valley Medical Center, Hemet, California. Internment was at the Hemet Valley Cemetery. She had been admitted to the hospital on Thursday October 26. Helen Witwer Clifton was born on a farm in Butler County, Iowa, on December 7, 1905 to Owen W. and Etta Hardman. She attended Packard County School and graduated from Greene High School in 1923. She married C.P. "Bud" Witwer in 1929. They moved to Greene in 1932. He preceded her in death in 1957. She resided in Greene until 1965, when she married Mont Clifton, also a Greene native son, and they moved together to Hemet, CA. Mr. Clifton passed away in 1983. Mrs. Clifton taught school in Greene for several years, and worked in the Sperry Insurance Agency for many years. She worked at the Butler County Courthouse for the last years of her residence in Greene. During her years in Greene, she was an active member of The First Methodist Church and the Eastern Star, of which she was a past worthy matron. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, her son, R.E. Witwer, and both husbands. Surviving are two daughters: MaryAnn Starin of Ventura, California, and Jane Stanley of Rockville, Maryland; two granddaughters and three grandsons."
