Stewartsville………Gordon D. Stephen, 88, was born October 7, 1922 in St. Joseph to Lee and Pearl (Hurltz) Stephen and passed away April 13, 2011 at his home.
On February 20, 1942, Gordon enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed at Buchner Bay, Okinawa during the severe typhoon in 1945 and received a commendation medal for outstanding and dangerous rescue work. Gordon was honorably discharged December 19, 1947 after six years of service. After discharged he returned to St. Joseph and married Ester Smith on March 27, 1949 and they just celebrated their 62 Anniversary.
Gordon worked as an auto service manager for Cooper Day Motors until they closed, and then was the first Auto Department Manager at Montgomery Wards at East hills. After several years he taught Auto Mechanics at Hillyard Technical School until retiring in June 1989. Gordon and Esther moved to the Stewartsville area and built a new house where Gordon worked with his son on the farm. Gordon also was an accomplished woodworker and made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Louse Cuzzart, brother, Lloyd Stephen.
Survivors his wife, Esther, one son, Rodney Stephen (Waunita); two grand-daughter, Kimberly and Rebecca, who were very dear to his heart; one niece, Rhonda Yarnell.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 Ridgeville Cemetery. Gordon's wishes were no scheduled visitation; however friends may call on Bram-Turner Funeral Home, Mayville from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
